Doc’s Photo Gallery captured it all!
Well….Doc McKenzie’s 60th Birthday celebration is now a part of history…
But, photographs from the event are now posted on the worldwide web for the rest of his life! (smile).
Family, fans and friends got together to help Doc McKenzie create a lifetime of memories that can now be viewed on his 60th Birthday website: http://www.Doc60th.com
For those of you who were not able to attend, and sent your regrets, this summary is for you!“Home Town Tour, Luncheon and The Dinner Cruise”
The two day event kicked off with a tour of Doc McKenzie’s hometown of Olanta, SC; a place where folks still yell “hey there” and wave at you as you drive down the street. Doc and his sister Ginny narrated the tour; pointing out landmarks and places that have shaped him to be the person that he is. The group stopped by one of his relatives home and visited with her as rocked on the front porch, visited his elementary school building, and the towns general store – which still sells washboards and big metal tubs. The day was perfect for a drive in the country…”There’s no place like home” said Doc on the tour.
After the tour ended, the group proceeded to the Thunderbird Restaurant; a nationally recognized and famous food spot, with one of the best buffets of southern style foods in South Carolina! The group dined in a private party room which was nicely decorated with place settings that said “Happy Birthday”, and centerpieces of red flowers wrapped in natural wood vases…it was really nice. Angela Breedlove, a partner of A&J Promotions out of Danville, VA made a special effort to join Doc McKenzie at the luncheon, along with dozens of others from all over the country.
Doc McKenzie chartered a bus to transport folks from Florence to Myrtle Beach for the Dinner Cruise. The boat was filled with folks who came in town from every corner of the country. SunCruz was pleased to host “Doc McKenzie’s 60th Birthday” group, and stated that Doc’s group was one of the largest they’ve had in years! Every person on the cruise was given a black tote bag from Doc, which had snacks, activity books, Bingo (DocGo) game cards and personalized playing cards with Doc McKenzie’s photograph on it. The best time of the evening was playing DocGo…instead of saying Bingo, the person would have to yell out “DocGo”. Throughout the night, folks broke open their Doc playing cards and had some really interactive and loud at time (smile) games going on. The food on board the cruise ship was also unbelievable, and there was plenty to eat all night long…“The Music”
The event was “off the chain” as the young folks say…
Of course the music from all the groups was exceptional – Doc didn’t expect anything less from them. Before the groups began, radio personality and promoter, Evangelist Loretta Coleman presented Doc with a musical tribute to the song “Thank You For Being A Friend” – I think Doc actually had a tear in his eye after that presentation. The line-up consisted of: The Singing Angels from Sumter, SC; who presented Doc McKenzie with a unique and harmonious version of “Happy Birthday To You”, the crowd absolutely loved the Singing Angels rendition of this classic song. Also from South Carolina was one of Doc’s favorite groups, Ernest Pearson & The Singing Disciples who also was a crowd pleaser. From Baltimore, MD came the Bells of Joy, who are becoming more prevalent on the national scene. Tommy Ellison’s Singing Stars represented the legacy left by Tommy Ellison with such grace. “Wow” is what many in the crowd said after their tear-jerker performance…The legend himself, Spencer Taylor & his electrifying Highway QC’s took no passengers!!! They came through that place like a freight train gone wild!!! Folks who wanted to jump on board couldn’t keep up with them…”where does Spencer get the energy from?” is what many were asking after his group left the crowd asking for more. At the end of the night Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites had to literally pull away from the crowd…folks didn’t want the night to end.“The Reception”
Throughout the night many games and special activities took place. There was a VIP “Take The Glass” reception – folks got to literally take the crystal glasses home with them; which had a black and gold “Doc60th Birthday” ribbon tied on the stem and was filled with personalized red and gold “Doc60th” M&M’s…It was truly a special touch for a special man of God. The reception was catered by two local vendors, and the spread was absolutely breath-taking. Oh, let’s not forget to mention the moist and pallet pleasing Red Velvet cake, which was designed with the photo of Doc that is on his website. No one wanted to cut the cake – we all wanted to take it home. During the reception many supporters presented Doc with special gifts and other keepsakes."Activities"
Doc wanted to make sure many folks in attendance would have an opportunity to play some of the games. Before the games began, Doc called all the children up to the front of the stage and gave them all gift bags with toys and candy. – the children, and some adults too (smile); who claimed their children were at home …had a great time receiving gifts from Doc from the stage. To begin the games, Doc did a “toilet paper toss” – which was personalized toilet paper with either the letter “D” or “M” or “musical notes” – that he tossed out in to the audience (some folks took the toilet paper to their car before the games began – and when the games started, they couldn’t play because the toilet paper was “in their car” – go figure!. For those who were fortunate enough to make it through the over-excited crowd…they were able to play some of the games throughout the night. The games included: “Unwrap the Prize”; which were boxes filled with different items – some valuable and some not so valuable (smile)…”Deal or No Deal” and “Let’s Make A Deal; where Doc asked the winner of a particular game to exchange what they won with one of the silver brief cases on the stage – everyone kept what they won, and the case with the “seven, crisp one hundred dollar bills” was left on the stage – unclaimed!…There was also Charades; where Doc sung the clues to “The Man In The Middle” – the person still wasn’t able to decode or win a prize…folks in the audience were even trying to give the answers! The funniest game was “Docpardy” – which was the events version of Jeopardy…All I can say is “My, my, my…some folks need to really learn more about the history of the Hi-Lites (smile)…There were Bibleology questions throughout the night, which also gave folks an opportunity to win prizes. There was also a large clear glass with Pinto beans and Rice (Doc’s favorite food) where folks had to guess how many were in the glass. Since no one guessed it correctly (his age, times the number of years he’s been on the earth, and don’t forget to include the leap years…) – the glass was ultimately given to Doc’s godmother who promised to prepare his favorite meal. The last and most spectacular event of the night was a special appearance by “Beyond Say” – a comedian who danced to Beyonce’s “All The Single Ladies” video by Powerpoint… “Beyond Say” was wondering why Doc had never married in 60 years? She gave advice to single ladies in the audience… Doc and many folks in the audience were laughing so hard, they were screaming…it was a perfect closure to a night of celebrating someone’s life and God’s gift to the world.“Gifts From Doc”
Doc McKenzie wanted to make sure everyone went home with something from him. So he created gift bags for the VIP guests which included so many different things; food, toiletries, Bibles, etc., He also had black embossed pens, activity books, a memory book, tote bags, VIP pillows, tee-shirts, playing cards with his photograph on them, and so much more…Not one person left without a gift from Doc McKenzie…“The Event Planning Committee”
This event could not have happened without the spiritual cohesion and cooperation of the Event Planning Committee, which worked diligently for nearly a year, and the assistance of dozens of folks who served as part of the street team and flier distribution efforts across the country. The Event Planning Committee was spearheaded by promoter, Beverly Hines; the President of Hi-Horn Productions from North Carolina, and also included folks from other parts of the country: including Hi-Lites Ministries Administrative Assistant, Stephanie Smith from New Jersey, Hi-Lites Ministries Publicist, Donna Love from Atlanta, GA, Promoter Lola Strange from Macon, GA, Pious Ventures Production Crew of Minnesota; artists Flossie Boyd Johnson from South Carolina and Ernest Pearson from South Carolina; television host Evangeline Bullock from Rocky Mount, NC; Grace Rhodes of Rhodes Productions in Virginia, and Yolanda “Prime 99” of Georgia. There were so many other folks who helped make this event a lifetime memory for Doc McKenzie, and he thanks each and everyone of you from the bottom of his heart…
